About the Event

“Consultant Guide to the MDOT SHA Utility Manual and As-Built Data Collection Methods” will be presented on Thursday, January 28 at 3:00 PM.  The 1-hour webinar will provide continuing education on relevant SUE procedures and methodologies. A certificate of completion will be issued to all attendees for their own possible use in meeting state licensing continuing education requirements.

Nelson Smith of the Maryland Department of Transportation MDOT State Highway Administration (SHA) will present the latest MDOT SHA utility manual, highlighting utility relocation and project coordination.  This presentation of the forthcoming utility manual will provide guidance on general provisions, permitting, construction, and what triggers environmental review for utility accommodation. Other topics describe how to install facilities near state assets such as bridges, signals, and other structures and concluding with proper maintenance of traffic requirements. It will also include an emphasis on project coordination and utility relocation for the success of projects that many peers and counterparts in other states can utilize.

William “Bill” Jackson, MDOT SHA Assistant Statewide Utility Engineer will present on behalf of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Utility Committee on how different states are managing utility as-built data. The presentation walks through permitted utility collection options for departments of transportation, including mobile technology solutions for obtaining as-built locations, or at least the record of an installation. This effort is leading to an as-constructed future for utilities in state rights-of-way through subsurface utility engineering and georeferencing that may become practices in many states.
